Promotion Policy
National Senior Certificate
Subject to the provisions of Paragraph 16(4)(d) and (e) of the General and Further Education and Training Quality Assurance Act, 2001 (Act No. 58 of 2001), a National Senior Certificate (NSC) shall be issued to a candidate who has complied with the following promotion requirements:
- Pass one official language at Home language level at 40%
- Pass 2 other subjects at 40%
- Pass 3 subjects at 30%
- One subject can be “Not Achieved” - below 30%
The above criteria apply for promotion in Grade 10 and 11 subject to the following internal amendments:
- Grade 10 and 11 scholars will be promoted to the next level only if they have achieved at least a “Partially Achieved” rating (30%) in their First Additional Language
- No promotion by means of a condonation will occur.
The marks (%) relating to the recording and reporting of level descriptor codes are as follows:

2. GRADE 8 & 9 PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS
Grade 9 marks the end of the compulsory phase of schooling and also the General Education and Training Band (GETC). Education in this band aims at providing learners with the basic competencies needed for lifelong learning.
2.1 PROMOTIONS
- The following requirements are to be met before the learner can be promoted to Grade 9 or 10 :

- Learners in Grade 8 & 9 must offer the prescribed Learning Areas as well as at least two official languages (one as a Primary Language and the other as Additional Language(s)).
- Learners must gain:
- at least an “Adequate achievement” rating, which is 50 – 59%, in their Language of learning and teaching and in 2 others Learning Areas
- At least an “Achieved” rating, which is 40 - 49%, in Mathematics and in 2 other Learning Areas
- at least a “Partially Achieved” rating (30%) in their First Additional Language
- No promotion by means of a condonation will occur.
2.5 EXEMPTIONS
Immigrants
An immigrant learner who has been in the country for less than 3 years will be exempted from the two official languages requirement. Any learner who arrives in South Africa to start school in Gr 7 or higher will qualify for Immigrant status. This learner will need to choose a seventh subject from the subjects on offer.
Deaf Learners
A deaf learner will be exempted from the two official languages requirement. However this learner still needs to offer two languages (South African Sign Language and one other official language OR two official languages in cases where Sign Language is not offered) but is required to obtain an “achieved" rating in only one of these languages
