School Rules
- Have respect for others
1.1 Courtesy and consideration for others should characterise pupils' conduct at all times.
1.2 Bad language, blasphemy and verbal victimisation will not be tolerated.
1.3 Pupils must, at all times, show respect to seniors, staff, adults and visitors to the school. They are expected to greet everyone they pass: Men must be addressed "Sir", and ladies "Mam".
1.4 Pupils are expected to stand up when a teacher, adult or visitor passes them in the corridor or enters the classroom or room they are in.
1.5 Grade 8 pupils will be expected to learn the names of all teachers and all Grade 12 pupils (designated by a Matric shirt or Matric tie) within two weeks of the start of the year. - Be regular and punctual in attendance (see attendance policy)
2.1 Daily attendance at school is compulsory and truancy is considered a Schedule 3 offence.
2.2 Punctuality is to be observed at all times. - Be aware of social responsibilities
3.1 Every pupil is to conform to the norms of the Grace College community, as determined by the Headmaster. These norms include honesty, courtesy, obedience, respect for self, superiors, peers and subordinates, and working to full potential. Each pupil should develop a self-discipline that ensures that he /she is an asset to the community.
3.2 Horseplay and foolish pranks are not acceptable.
3.3 Certain areas of the school are, at the discretion of the Headmaster, out of bounds. These will be made clear to the pupils from time to time. Pupils in Grades 8, 9 and 10 may not enter areas designated from time to time by the Headmaster as reserved for Senior pupils (Grades 11 and 12).
3.4 All pupils are to participate fully in the school curriculum, including the Outreach Programme which is compulsory.
3.5 Pupils must avoid doing anything which would bring the good name of the school into disrepute.
3.6 It is the responsibility of every pupil to report any contravention of the school rules. - Take academic work seriously
4.1 Grace College is a school where academic standards are high and pupils are expected to take pride in their work.
4.2 Pupils who consistently fail to complete work or to hand in set assignments must expect to be punished and to have this behaviour reported to parents.
4.3 Homework is expected of all pupils and must be conscientiously done each day. Pupils are expected to keep a homework diary. A Homework Timetable is provided by the school as a guide. - Participate fully in the life of the school
5.1 All pupils are expected to participate in at least one extramural activity per term.
5.2 When pupils commit themselves to an activity, they do so for the duration of that activity's season. Absence from sports practices and matches is viewed in a very serious light. Inability to fulfil an obligation must be registered with the relevant coach or teacher in good time so that alternative arrangements can be made.
5.3 Pupils are expected to behave with control and dignity on the playing field and to treat the opposition and the referee/umpire with respect, politeness and consideration.
5.4 Good sportsmanship is considered to be more important at Grace College than winning. - Adhere to set procedures in designated areas
6.1 Hall: Silence must be observed from 7:40 a.m. when lining up outside the Hall. Pupils must enter in an orderly fashion and obey instructions given by staff members or prefects. There is to be no talking until pupils have left the Hall. Only Grade 12 pupils may enter the Hall through the Foyer. All other pupils must make use of the steps on the western side of the building.
6.2 Offices: Apart from the prefects, pupils may only go upstairs in the Administration Building when permission has been granted by the Receptionist or a teacher. The Staffroom, Staff Workroom, Reception Office and Staff/Guest toilets are out of bounds to pupils at all times.
6.3 Computer Centre: No bags may be taken into the Centre at any time. Any tampering with either hardware or software in a way which will negatively affect the use which other pupils need to make of the equipment will be considered as vandalism. Pupils may only use the Centre when a teacher is present or the Computer Centre Monitor is in the room.
6.4 Library: No bags may be taken into the Library at any time. Procedures for use of the Library and the taking out of books will be explained from time to time by the Librarian or Library Monitor.
6.5 Staff car parks: These are out of bounds to pupils at all times. - Be responsible regarding transport
7.1 Pupils may not ride their bicycles on the drop-off zone around the main driveway, nor on any pathways or corridors. Pupils must dismount on arrival through the main gate and push their bikes to the storage rack. Pupils are requested to provide their own chains and locks, so that bicycles can be secured during the day. Bicycles may not be ridden during the school day.
7.2 Motorbikes or cars may be used as transport to and from school, but may not be used during the school day. These may be parked in the parent car-park to the east of the driveway. The speed limit within the confines of the school grounds is 30kph and pupils exceeding this will have this privilege withdrawn.
7.3 All traffic rules must be meticulously obeyed.
7.4 No ball games, skateboarding or similar activities are allowed in the tarred parking and drop-off areas.
7.5 Pupils using the School Bus should treat it with care and should not do anything while travelling in the bus to cause possible harm to other pupils or to bring the good name of the school into disrepute. - Show respect for property
8.1 Pupils are expected to take pride in the appearance of their school. No littering will be tolerated. Refuse bins must be used.
8.2 No eating is allowed in the buildings without permission from a member of staff.
8.3 Pupils must respect the property of others. Theft is viewed in a very serious light.
8.4 Care must be taken of all school property. Defacing of desks, furniture and buildings is strictly forbidden.
8.5 Books and equipment on loan to pupils must be returned in good condition when called for. Any shortfall or damage must be made good by the pupil.
8.6 The wire enclosures around the gas bottles at the laboratories are strictly out of bounds.
8.7 Fire hoses and extinguishers may not be touched except in case of fire.
